STONE HILL STATEMENT ON NECRONOMICON 2021 and COVID-19 SAFETY

We are proud to be offering Necronomicon 2021 live this year after last year's virtual convention. While last year's festivities were fun, they were also necessary because of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, things are different. There are safe and effective vaccines. There's a better understanding of the virus and its effects. We also believe Necronomicon, like most fandom conventions, is best experienced in person when practical. While we understand that the present world is still different from the one in 2019, our previous live convention, we believe that by requiring and following simple, reasonable safety precautions, we can provide a positive experience to our members.

Those precautions are as follows:

All attendees will wear masks in common areas. Masks must cover the nose and mouth.
We believe that this step will help improve safety based on current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines

Exceptions: On-stage performers may remove their masks while performing, and panelists may remove their masks while talking, but all such people must maintain as safe a distance from others and the audience as practical. We are asking that attendees keep a reasonable distance from each other. In most cases, this will mean following CDC standards for social distancing.

We strongly recommend and encourage attendees to get fully vaccinated before the convention if possible. We accept the general scientific consensus that the several vaccines that have been rolled out are proving safe and effective for those who can receive them. While no vaccine is 100 percent effective, those manufactured by Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson have met rigorous standards and have already provided a high degree of protection with minimal side effects. However, at this time, we are not mandating vaccinations or medical exceptions for attendees.

Enforcement is not practical given the number of staff and volunteers available at this time. We regret this unfortunate reality, and we understand if this impacts your perception of safety.

Given state law, enforceability may also be an issue from a legal standpoint.
We are also cooperating with the Embassy Suites by Hilton to maintain the highest possible standards for safety and sanitation through attendee spaces.

While we understand that some may disagree with our policies, we believe they are the most appropriate for our convention given the situation, and are now part of our Code of Conduct, which all attendees must agree to and sign before attending. Our Code of Conduct has been an integral part of keeping Necronomicon a positive experience for our guests by minimizing disruptive behavior and reducing risks.
This has been an extraordinary period in our civilization, and we are all still adapting worldwide, not just at the level of a small not-for-profit volunteer-organized multi-fandom convention. But we will continue to adapt and strive to provide the best possible experience for our attendees and volunteers.
